Clarkson takes doubleheader from Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Clarkson University (10-8) swept the SUNY Potsdam softball team (3-15) in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon. The Golden Knights won game one 6-0 and edged the Bears 3-2 in game two.

Clarkson took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game one, on a ground out. They added a run in the top of the sixth as sophomore third baseman Elizabeth Greco (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) singled down the right field line.

Clarkson then broke the game open with four runs on six hits in the top of the seventh. The big blow was a two-run single from sophomore right fielder Bridget Kerwin (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton).

Sophomore pitcher Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y../Skaneateles) (0-5) allowed six runs, five earned, on 10 hits for the Bears. Sophomore Devin Fitzpatrick (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) allowed just three hits and struck out seven to earn the shutout for Clarkson.

Bears senior first baseman Anna Grottola (Ronkonkoma,  N.Y./Connetquot) was 2-for-3. Kerwin finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI for the Golden Knights. Sophomore centerfielder Emma Sabourin (Grand Island, N.Y./Essex) was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Greco went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk.

Game two was a pitcher's duel for its entirety. Clarkson took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single from senior designated player Bridget Twaits (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon). The Golden Knights scored two more in the fourth. Kerwin came home on a steal of second by Sabourin and Greco drove in Sabourin with a single to right.

The Bears countered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore shortstop Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Junior catcher Alexa Abbatantuono (Corinth, N.Y./Corinth) followed with a triple to make it 3-1 and then scored on an error. Down one, Potsdam threatened, but Clarkson senior pitcher Riley Page (Norwalk, Conn./St. Luke's School) worked her way out the jam and then threw a perfect seventh to close out the win.

Junior pitcher Anna Brown (Ellenburg Depot, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) (0-5) allowed three runs in five innings and struck out three. Senior Chesnie York (Cornith, N.Y./Corinth) worked two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and fanning two. Page (6-3) allowed two runs on six hits and struck out four for the complete game victory.

Abbatantuono went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Clarkson sophomore shortstop Kaya Johnson (Thomaston, Conn./Thomaston) was also 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored.

The Bears are back in action on Thursday, when they travel to SUNY Cobleskill for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
