Bengals down Bears

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Buffalo State (6-8, 2-6 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (2-12, 0-8) 19-12 on Saturday. Junior captain Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) led the Bears with a career-high five goals, while sophomore attack Mallory Marks (Brownville, N.Y./General Brown) scored three and senior attack Anita Reitano (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) had two.
 
The teams split the contest's first four goals. LaDue finished a feed from freshman midfielder Megan MacWilliams (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) to tie the game at 1-1 at 9:37 and sophomore defender Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) evened the game at two apiece at 7:17. The Bengals then closed the first quarter with a 5-0 run and led 7-2 after 15 minutes.
 
LaDue scored her second just 1:01 into the second quarter, but Buffalo State answered with another 5-0 run for a 12-3 lead at 3:51. Sophomore attack Mallory Marks (Brownville, N.Y./General Brown) scored at 2:18 and LaDue netted her third of the game at 1:17. The Bengals closed the half on a goal with 13 seconds remaining and led 13-5 at the break.
 
Bears junior attack AnnaBelle Mitchell (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) opened the third quarter with a man-up goal at 11:10. Buffalo State countered with two more before Potsdam freshman midfielder Auna Shadle (Massena, N.Y./Massena) set up Marks' second of the game with an assist for her first collegiate point. The Bengals answered again with back-to-back man-up goals, but LaDue buried her fourth with 21 seconds left. Buffalo State led 17-8 after 45 minutes.
 
Reitano scored her first of the day at 10:40 of the fourth quarter to get Potsdam within 17-9 and after another Bengal tally, added her second to make it 18-10 with 5:57 left. Marks followed with her third just 12 seconds later. LaDue closed the scoring with a man-up goal with 54 seconds on the clock.
 
Freshman goalie Jane Olszewski (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) allowed 13 goals and made six saves in a half for the Bears, while fellow freshman Olivia Minarich (Albany, N.Y./Albany) allowed six goals and stopped eight shots in the rest of the game. Beth Kulikowski made six saves and allowed six goals in the first 35:45 to earn the win for the Bengals, while Moira Penot stopped three shots in 24:15.
 
Vanessa Willick led the Bengals with six points on four goals and two assists. Sarah Fineour had four goals and an assist. Lauren Rinow scored four goals and Emilee Josker had three goals and an assist.
 
The Bears wrap up the season on Wednesday at Plattsburgh State with a 7 p.m. matchup.
