Red Dragons take doubleheader from Bears

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam softball team (6-24, 2-10 SUNYAC) dropped a pair of contests to SUNY Oneonta (13-16-1, 7-5 SUNYAC) on Thursday evening. The Red Dragons won the first game 14-10 in high-scoring fashion. Oneonta took the second game 4-3 in a tightly contested matchup.

The Bears scored early in game one. Sophomore shortstop Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) brought home senior outfielder Chesnie York (Corinth, N.Y./Corinth) on a double to left center field in the opening inning.

Potsdam plated the first six runs in the second inning until the Red Dragons answered in the bottom of the inning with four runs of their own. With bases loaded, York earned the RBI as she walked in sophomore outfielder Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles). Dobransky then drove in junior catcher Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) and second baseman Kiara Lovejoy (Lansing, N.Y./Lansing) on a single to second base. Junior designated player Alexa Abbatanuono (Corinth, N.Y./Corinth) beat out the throw from the third baseman to score Dobransky two plays later. On the following at-bat, sophomore third baseman Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./North Collins) hit an RBI single up the middle to bring home senior first baseman Anna Grottola (Ronkonoma, N.Y./Connetquot) as the Bears took a 6-0 lead. The Red Dragons then scored four unanswered runs of their own. Marissa Nagel plated Victoria Hussey on a sacrifice fly to left field. With bases loaded, Abigail Silliman advanced home on an error by the first baseman. Adriana Fiori then scored on passed ball and Delaney Haley rounded home on a base hit to third base as the Red Dragons trailed the Bears 6-4 heading into the third.

A total of nine hits in the third resulted in 10 runs scored between both squads. The Bears struck first in the top of the inning when both York and Cottrill came home on a triple down the right field line from Dobransky, who also scored on the play and gave Potsdam a 9-4 lead. The Red Dragons then broke out the bats in the bottom of the third, connecting on seven hits for seven runs. Silliman plated Sara Cartier on an RBI single to right field. Sarah Paige singled on a bunt, allowing Hussey to sneak home on the throw to first base. Julia Serena hit a two RBI single to left field, scoring Silliman and Gianna Cancelleri. Megan Palmatier brought home Serena and Paige on a triple to right field. After advancing around the bases, Palmetier then scored on a wild pitch, giving Oneonta the 11-9 advantage going into the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, Hussey scored for the Red Dragons as Silliman was caught stealing. In the following inning, Palmetier hit a two-run home run to extend Oneonta's lead 14-9 going into the sixth. York plated Lovejoy on a single to third base in the seventh but the Bears couldn't keep the offense rolling as they fell to the Red Dragons 14-10 in the opening contest.

York came in to relieve Brown in the fifth, pitching the remainder of the game, allowing two runs on three hits. The game was scoreless until the second inning when Cottrill and sophomore outfielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) rounded home on an error by the centerfielder. In the bottom of the third, with two runners in scoring position, Paige scored on a passed ball for the Red Dragons. Serena then plated Haley on a base hit to center field to tie the game at two runs apiece heading into the fourth inning.

Neither team could manage a run until the top of the sixth when Abbatanuono walked with the bases loaded, scoring York for the Bears. Down a run in the seventh inning, Fiori was brought home on a single to right field which tied the game for Oneonta.
