Hawks sweep past Bears

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.—SUNY New Paltz (26-10, 13-1 SUNYAC) swept the SUNY Potsdam softball team (6-26, 2-12) in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Hawks took game one 8-0 and game two by a 13-4 score.

New Paltz scored all eight of their runs in the fourth inning of game one. Six runs scored on base hits and two on ground outs.

Junior pitcher Anna Brown (Ellenburg Depot, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) (1-9) allowed eight earned runs on nine hits in four innings. Lindsay Roman (15-2) picked up the win for New Paltz, limiting the Bears to one hit in four innings, while striking out six. Jillian Harrison allowed one hit in a scoreless top of the fifth.

Sophomore shortstop Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) and sophomore centerfielder Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) each had a hit for the Bears.

Jackie Rometo led the Hawks, going 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.

Game two started as a see-saw battle before New Paltz broke the game open late. Senior first baseman Anna Grottola (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) got the Bears on the board in the top of the first with a single to left that scored sophomore second baseman Kiara Lovejoy (Lansing, N.Y./Lansing).

New Paltz countered with two runs in the bottom of the first. A ground out and an RBI single from Sydney Bonewit put the Hawks up 2-1.

The Bears regained the lead with a three-run third inning. Dobransky tied the game with a single that scored Lovejoy. Grottola followed with another single to plate senior left fielder Chesnie York (Corinth, N.Y./Corinth). Dobransky then scored after Grottola attempted to steal second and Potsdam led 4-2.

A home run by Jillian Shelburne and a sacrifice fly from Kelly Marmorowski tied the game in the bottom of the third. Shelburne then put the Hawks up for good with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.

New Paltz scored three in the third, the big blow coming on a two-run single from Rometo. The Hawks then closed out the game with a five run bottom of the sixth. Emmie Mae Cabrera hit an RBI double and Isabella Shepard had a two-run single to right.

Bears sophomore pitcher Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) (2-9) allowed eight earned runs on 13 hits in five innings. Graduate student Sierra Ashley (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) allowed three earned runs on four hits in the last two-thirds of an inning. Sydney Waldon started and didn't receive a decision after allowing four runs on six hits in the first three innings. Harrison (3-7) closed out the game by pitching three perfect innings and striking out three.
