Brockport escapes Bears in double overtime, 10-9

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Brockport (3-7, 1-2 SUNYAC) won a see-saw battle with the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (6-5, 0-3) 10-9 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon. Senior captain Peyton Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) matched a career-high with eight points on six goals and two assists for the Bears. Junior attackman Cobie Cree (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) scored Potsdam's other three goals.

Only two goals were scored in the first quarter. Sophomore attackman Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) set up Peyton to open the scoring at 13:33. Sophomore attackman Jesse Wooley (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) tied the game for Brockport at 7:12.

Senior midfielder Jhovanny Olivares (Minisink, N.Y./Minisink Valley) put the Golden Eagles up 2-1 at 8:33. However, Peyton Walsh countered with two in a row at 7:44 and 6:17. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Hughes (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) assisted on the second goal. Brockport junior attack Ben Hay (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) tied the game at 4:11, but Peyton Walsh answered again 30 seconds later with a helper from senior midfielder Jakob Lynch (Alexandria Bay, N.Y./Alexandria) to make it 4-3. The Eagles answered with goals from sophomore midfielder Nate Askin (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) and Olivares to take a 5-4 lead into the break.

Olivares extended the lead to two goals just 1:09 into the second half. Cree closed the gap at 8:43 with an assist from Senior attackman Noah Strader (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy). Askin then fed Olivares for his fourth goal of the contest to make it 7-6 with 10 seconds left and Brockport was up two after 45 minutes.

The Bears started the fourth quarter strong, scoring three goals in a row and grabbing an 8-7 advantage. Peyton Walsh scored his fifth at 9:34. Cree buried his second while the Bears were a man-up 45 seconds later. Peyton Walsh closed the run with his sixth at 6:41. Brockport was able to halt the momentum with a goal from senior midfielder Ryan McCarthy (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills West). With 2:18 remaining, Peyton Walsh set up Cree to complete the hat trick and Potsdam looked to close out the contest with a 9-8 lead. It wasn't to be. With less than four seconds on the clock, junior attackman Carson Colucci Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) tied the game with a man-up goal and sent the contest to overtime.

Bears junior goalie Liam O'Neil (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) stymied the Golden Eagles twice in the first overtime. However, Askin struck with 2:05 left in the second overtime to give Brockport the win.

O'Neil finished 17 saves for the Bears. Golden Eagles goalie Cameron Kuzniar (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) made 14 stops for the win.
