Bears retain Jones Cup with 3-0 victory over Canton

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (1-0) defeated SUNY Canton (0-1) 3-0 in the 13th annual Boyd Jones Cup on Friday night in the teams' season opener. Freshman forward Morgan Williams (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney), sophomore forward Madison Wagner (Chittenango, N.Y./Chittenango) and freshman forward Adrianna Orlando (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) each scored for the Bears as first-year head coach Kelsey Morrison picked up her first win in Potsdam.

It was all Bears in the first half. They outshot the Kangaroos 14-0 and put seven shots on goal. Canton freshman goalie Emma Cahill (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) made five saves, but Potsdam solved her twice in the opening 45 minutes. The Roos committed a foul at the 15-minute mark and 54 seconds later, Williams buried the direct kick for her first career goal. Just 2:03 before the break, senior midfielder Kienle Burns (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) launched a corner kick into the box and Wagner headed the ball off the crossbar and in for her first collegiate marker.

It was more of the same in the second half. The Bears kept the pressure on, outshooting Canton 9-1. At 78:40, Orlando picked up a pass from freshman midfielder Samantha Parsons (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) at the left side of the box and ripped it into the top right corner of the net to make it 3-0. The goal was also the first of her career.

Bears senior captain Savannah Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) didn't face a shot in the first 57:55 and freshman goalie Caroline Vines (Irondequoit, N.Y./Irondequoit) had the same fate in the last 32:05. Cahill finished with 11 saves for Canton.

The Bears outshot the Roos 23-1 on the night and had the only eight corners of the game.

Potsdam is now 16-0-1 in the all-time series with Canton.

The Bears are back in action when they host St. Lawrence University at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.
