POTSDAM, N.Y.—Junior midfielder
Sarah Emmi (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John Glenn) scored in the 27th minute to lift the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-0) to a 1-0 victory over St. Lawrence University (1-1-1) on Tuesday night. The victory ended a 21-game winless streak (0-20-1) against the Saints dating back to September 24, 1996 and was the Bears' third ever in the all-time series. Junior goalie
Savannah Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) made eight saves and claimed her 10th career win and second shutout.
The physical first half was fought mostly in the midfield as the teams combined for eight fouls and just six shots. Bowie turned aside all three Saints chances she faced. In the 26th minute, Potsdam earned a corner kick. The ball was launched into the scrum in front of the net and Emmi headed it off an SLU defender. Saints senior goalie Keely Snode (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) punched the ball out right to Emmi and she drove it home for a 1-0 lead at the 26:45 mark. Moments later, junior Darcie McDonough (Rowley, Mass./Triton Regional) replaced Snode in the Saints goal. The score was unchanged at the break.
St. Lawrence was able to turn up the pressure in the second half. The Saints outshot the Bears 13-3 and generated the only seven corner kicks of the half. Bowie stopped another five shots and the defense kept SLU at bay to close out the win.
The Saints finished with a 17-5 edge in shots and an 8-2 advantage in corners. Snode was tagged with the loss after allowing the goal and making one save in the first 30:16. McDonough stopped one shot in the final 59:44.
The Bears look to keep the momentum going when they head to Saratoga Springs on Saturday to take on Skidmore College at 3 p.m.
