UTICA, N.Y.—Utica University (3-2) scored late in the opening 45 minutes and held on for a 1-0 win over the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-2) on Tuesday night.
The defenses controlled the play in the first half, as only five shots were attempted. Utica outshot Potsdam 4-1. The Pioneers managed two shots on Bears sophomore goalie
Rylee Semco (Slate Hill, N.Y./Minisink Valley) and finally solved her late in the half. In the 36th minute, Sofia Fini finished a feed from Natalia Bell and Utica led 1-0 at the break.
The Bears outshot Utica in 7-5 in the second half. Pioneer goalie Courtney Connolly and Semco each made two saves, but the score was unchanged.
Each goalie had three saves on the evening. Utica finished with nine shots to Potsdam's eight and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bears open SUNYAC play at SUNY Oneonta at noon on Saturday.
