Quick strike leads Red Dragons over Bears in SUNYAC opener, 2-0

ONEONTA, N.Y.—SUNY Oneonta (4-0-2, 1-0) scored just 99 seconds into Saturday's SUNYAC opener and went on to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-3, 0-1) 2-0.

Kaiden Ring scored at the 1:39 of the match on an assist from Joie Tortorice. Senior goalie Savannah Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) made four saves over the rest of the half to keep the Bears within striking distance. The Red Dragons outshot Potsdam 5-2 before the break.

Oneonta's offense kept pressing in the second half, but Bowie and Potsdam's defense kept it at bay until late in the contest. At 81:39, Ring struck again to make it a 2-0 contest. Bears junior midfielder Sarah Emmi (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John Glenn) nearly got the Potsdam on the board in the 87th minute, but Red Dragons goalie Bryanna Meehan made the save.

Bowie finished with six saves and Meehan had three for the shutout. Oneonta outshot Potsdam 12-5 and finished with a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday when they host North Country and SUNYAC foe Plattsburgh State at 4 p.m
