Bears bow to Saints, derail Express to split home opener

POTSDAM, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University (2-4) rallied for a 3-2 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (2-5) in the first match of the night at Maxcy Hall Fieldhouse. The Bears then rebounded for a 3-1 win over Wells College (3-6) in the finale.
 
The Saints rallied past Potsdam in the first match. The Bears took the first and third sets by 25-22 and 25-17 scores. SLU answered with wins in the second (25-19), fourth (25-23) and fifth sets (15-13). Junior opposite Alyssa Adams (Jamestown, N.Y./Randolph) led Potsdam with 18 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Freshman outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) recorded 13 kills and 10 digs. Senior opposite Kendall Jones (Parker, Colo./Elizabeth) posted 10 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore setter Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) had 36 assists and four aces.
 
Freshman middle hitter Araiza Acum-Santos (Springfield, Mass./Springfield) had a match-high 21 kills to lead the Saints. Senior Vivian Zymeck (Millwood, N.Y./Horace Greeley) registered 20 kills, 15 digs and two blocks. Freshman defensive specialist Kori Meissner (Williamstown, Mass./Loomis Chaffee) added 11 digs and four aces. Senior defensive specialist Katrina Henrich (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) had three aces and nine digs and freshman setter Vanessa Latam (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional) rounded out the leaders with 45 assists.
 
After falling 26-24 in the first set to Wells, the Bears rattled off three straight wins by 29-27, 25-23 and 25-16 scores. Adams led the Bears again with 19 kills, three aces and 16 digs. Prest finished with 11 kills and Jones had six kills, three aces and six assists. Layer added 35 assists and five aces to her totals for the evening. Freshman libero Madison Gilliland (Rossville, Ga./Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe) recorded a career-high 21 digs and junior middle hitter Marissa Wagoner (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) contributed four blocks.
 
Senior middle hitter Miah Williamson (Elk Grove, Calif./Consumnes River College) paced the Express with 14 kills, three aces and a block. Freshman outside hitter Alycia Wilson (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) had nine kills. Freshman middle hitter Marta Corral Cajigas (Madrid, Spain/Colegio Estudio) totaled seven kills. Junior libero Roosa Armstead-Lehti (Kailua, Hawaii/Moanalua) had 16 digs, three aces and three assists. Sophomore setter Brianah Dawson (Dallas, Texas/South Oak Cliff) added 24 assists, 13 digs, three aces and a block. Freshman setter Sarina Soto (Woodland, Calif./Pioneer) also reached double-digits with 11 digs.
 
The Bears are back in action tomorrow with two matches. They host Hilbert College at noon followed by Northern Vermont University-Johnson at 4 p.m.
