CANTON, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University (1-2-2) scored in the seventh minute and made it stand up for a 1-0 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (3-1-1) on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore goalie
Ian Schwartz (Amsterdam, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth) made five saves in his second career start for the Bears.
At 6:43, Max Mogul scored the contest's lone goal with a shot into the lower right corner of the goal. The Saints outshot Potsdam 6-2 in the opening half. Schwartz stopped two shots before the break.
The second half was more tightly contested, with SLU building an 8-5 advantage in shots. However, only three made their way to Schwartz and he handled each attempt. The Bears tested Saints goalie Ben Woelfinger three times as well, but couldn't crack the scoreboard.
Woelfinger made four saves to earn the shutout. SLU outshot Potsdam 14-7 on the afternoon, but the corners were just one apiece.
The Bears open SUNYAC play on Wednesday when they travel to Plattsburgh State for a 7 p.m. match.
