Bears slay Fighting Tigers, fall to Soaring Eagles

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (4-7) was victorious over SUNY Cobleskill (3-8) but dropped the second match to Elmira College (5-8) on Saturday afternoon. The Bears captured a 3-1 (18-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-20) decision over Cobleskill and fell to Elmira College 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 17-25, 19-25).
 
In the first match against the Fighting Tigers, junior opposite hitter Alyssa Adams (Jamestown, N.Y./Randolph) led the Bears with a career-high 21 kills. Junior outside hitter Megan Henry (Candor, N.Y./Candor) also tallied a career-high 13 kills along with 10 digs and one service ace. Freshman outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) racked up 10 kills. Sophomore setter Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) had a career-high 42 assists with 13 digs and two service aces. Junior defensive specialist Morgan Buckley (Third Lake, Ill./Grayslake North) registered 10 digs and two service aces while senior middle hitter Lexi Price (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) posted two total blocks.
 
Alexis Miranda tallied 13 kills while Emma Hinze followed closely with nine kills to round out the offense for Cobleskill. Baylee Kirschberg led the Fighting Tigers with 21 assists and Lydia McDonough registered 15 digs and four service aces.
 
In the second match of the afternoon, Adams paced the Bears with 14 kills and Henry posted 6 kills and six digs. Layer contributed 27 assists along with six digs and one service ace. Freshman defensive specialist Madison Gilliland (Rossville, Ga./Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe) had three service aces and Buckley finished with 19 digs to back the Bears on defense. Price, Adams, and Prest combined for four total blocks for Potsdam.
 
Maddie Boucher led the Soaring Eagles with 13 kills and a game-high five service aces. Makenna Clark tallied 12 kills and Morgan Richardson contributed 11 kills and nine digs. Asia Curkendall had 34 assists for Elmira and Gabriela Rodriguez posted 19 digs.
 
The Bears are back in action on Friday, September 29 when they travel to SUNY Geneseo for a 6 p.m. kick-off.
