POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (6-2-1, 2-0 SUNYAC) scored twice in the second half to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-4-2, 0-2-2) 2-0 on Wednesday night at Maxcy Turf Field. Senior captain
Savannah Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) made five saves for the Bears.
While the Red Dragons outshot Potsdam in the first half, the Bears had more chances than the visitors. Potsdam fire twice on junior goalie Kristen Spendal (Dumont, N.J./Dumont), while only giving up one shot on Bowie. However, both keepers were unbeatable in a scoreless first half.
Cortland finally broke through in the 55th minute. After picking up the ball on a throw-in in the Bears end of the field, graduate student forward Jayden Kelley (East Berne, N.Y./Voorheesville) worked her way around a Potsdam defender and fired into the goal at 54:37. Freshman midfielder Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) assisted on the goal. Just 5:07 later, Cortland doubled its lead. Senior forward Liz Allen (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) headed the ball on goal and Bowie made the save. Unfortunately, the rebound went off a Bears defender and into the net to make it 2-0. Potsdam kept the Red Dragons at bay for the rest of the contest.
Spendal finished with four saves to earn the shutout.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Fredonia for a 1 p.m. contest.
