FREDONIA, N.Y.—SUNY Fredonia (5-4-1, 2-2 SUNYAC) scored three times in the second half to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-5-2, 0-3-2) 4-0 on Saturday afternoon. Senior captain
Savannah Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) made 11 saves.
The Blue Devils took advantage of a penalty kick in the ninth minute. Jordan Barrett made the most of the opportunity at 8:18. Fredonia kept the edge through the first half, outshooting Potsdam 12-9. Bowie made seven saves to keep the Bears close.
After more back-and-forth play to open the last half, Fredonia pulled away with two goals in a 1:56 span. Katie Sellers doubled the Blue Devil lead at 61:38 and Gabrielle Irwin made it a 3-0 contest at 63:34. At 80:07, the Blue Devils tacked on a fourth goal as Jenna Hewitt knocked home a rebound.
Bowie played the first 74:45 followed by freshman
Caroline Vines (Irondequoit, N.Y./Irondequoit) who made two stops and allowed a goal in the final 15:15. Abby Szymkowiak made six saves to earn the win in the first 73:42. Dani Rubino made one save in the last 16:18 to preserve the shutout.
Fredonia outshot the Bears 26-16 and had a 6-2 edge in corners.
Potsdam is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to SUNY New Paltz for a 4 p.m. contest.
