POTSDAM, N.Y.—All three goals were scored in the second half as SUNY Fredonia (5-3-3, 1-3 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (3-5-1, 0-4) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Turf Field. Junior forward
Justin Mossey (Amity Harbor, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored for the Bears.
The first half was a defensive battle. The Blue Devils managed the only two shots of the opening 45 minutes. Fredonia's best chance came with just over 11 minutes left as junior forward Kaleb Steward (Kennedy, N.Y./Randolph) launched a direct kick toward the upper right corner of the goal. Bears senior goalie
Lucas Schiel (Bremen, Germany/Colegio Humboldt) dove to his left and knocked the ball wide of the post. It remained scoreless at the half.
Fredonia took the lead in the 49th minute. After a foul in the box, Blue Devils junior forward Brian Taylor (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) buried the ensuing penalty kick into the right corner of the net. The Bears countered at 53:20. Freshman midfielder
Jake Trubia (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) hustled after a loose ball across in the midfield and played it ahead to junior captain
Zach Cunningham (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East). Cunningham stepped around a defender and fed Mossey at his left, who buried the equalizer. Fredonia jumped back on top at 78:05. The ball was played back to Schiel, but not hard enough as senior midfielder Andres Martinez (Cuenca, Equador/American School) charged in. He fired a shot off Schiel and then deposited his own rebound into the open net. Potsdam pressed late, but couldn't get even a second time.
Schiel finished with two saves, while Blue Devils junior goalie tanner Stutzman (Hornell, N.Y/Hornell) made six stops for the win.
Fredonia edged the Bears in shots 10-8 and had a 9-2 advantage in corners.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, when they host SUNY New Paltz at 4 p.m.
