Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bears hold off Knights, 95-87

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (3-10, 2-4 SUNYAC) built a sizable lead before putting SUNY Geneseo (5-8, 2-4 SUNYA) away with clutch free throw shooting in a 95-87 win on Friday evening. Senior guard Colton Huestis (Ticonderoga, N.Y./Ticonderoga) led the Bears with 19 points. Senior guard Isaac Oduro Jr. (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) scored 17 points, grabbed six rebounds and recorded four assists. Junior forward Kawar Singh (Queens, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) narrowly missed a triple-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks.

Potsdam led for much of the first half early on, but wasn't able to get much separation from the Knights. A 6-0 run on four points from Singh and a layup from freshman guard Nicholas Cortez (New York, N.Y./Forest Hills) put the Bears up 15-9 at 11:44. Geneseo answered with an 11-6 stretch to grab its first lead of the contest at 23-21 with 7:45 left in the half. Junior guard Sebastian Pachecho (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) scored on a layup 30 seconds later and the Knights had their biggest lead of the half at 25-21. The push woke up the Bears, who finished the opening 20 minutes on a 24-6 run. Freshman guard Erik Wall (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) hit back-to-back three's to tie the game at 27-27 and give Potsdam its lead back at 30-27. Junior forward Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) put the exclamation on the run and the half with a dunk at 0:20 and sent the Bears into the locker room up 45-31.

Potsdam stayed well out in front of the Knights for much of the second half. At the 15:31 mark, Cortez sank a three to give the Bears their biggest lead of the game at 55-35. Geneseo slowly chipped away at the deficit over the remainder of the game. A layup from freshman guard Robert Perocolosi (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) got the Knights within 61-52 to cap a 17-6 run. Oduro sank a three at 9:22 to briefly regain Potsdam's double digit lead at 68-58. An 8-0 charge by Geneseo, capped by a Perocolosi jumper, closed the gap to 79-77 with 3:31 on the clock. An old fashioned 3-point play from Singh slowed the Knights' momentum and gave the Bears an 82-77 lead at seconds later. After a Kelly jumper, Potsdam closed out the contest at the free-throw line, sinking 11 of 14 attempts. Huestis sank seven of his eight shots from the charity stripe.

Cortez scored a career-high 13 points, while Kelly finished with 10 points, nine boards and three assists. Sophomore guard Kaleb Lewis (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) also reached double digits with 10 points to go with nine rebounds.

Perocolosi led all scorers with 20 points to go with eight boards. Freshman forward Ethan Meisel (Smithtown, N.Y./Commack) scored 15 points and totaled five rebounds. Senior guard Cole Kattan (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) rounded out the leaders with 13 points and nine assists.

The Bears shot 45.5-percent from the floor, including 47.1-percent from three. They also sank 84.4-percent of their free throws.

Potsdam is back in action tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. when the Bears host SUNY Brockport.
