Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Golden Eagles wear down Bears late

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Brockport (8-5, 4-3 SUNYAC) trailed at halftime, but pulled away late for a 90-74 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (3-11, 2-5) on Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Colton Huestis (Ticonderoga, N.Y./Ticonderoga) scored a career and game-high 30 points to lead the Bears. Freshman guard Nicholas Cortez (New York, N.Y./Forest Hills) also registered a personal best with 19 points.

Multiple ties and lead changes were the story of the first half. Neither team led by more than three points through the first 9:27. At 10:33, junior forward Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) sank a three to give Potsdam a 23-18 lead, their biggest of the half. Huestis did the same at 9:03 to preserve a five-point lead, but the Golden Eagles rallied with an 8-0 run. Junior guard Nate Severson (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) hit a three at 6:35 and Brockport was up 31-28. After Cortez tied the game with a 3-point play, the Eagles scored the next seven and led 38-31 at 3:51. Again, Severson capped the charge with a three. This time it was the Bears turn to heat up as they closed the half with an 11-4 flourish. Huestis and junior forward Kawar Singh (Queens, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) each scored four points and Kelly hit a three at the buzzer to send the Bears into the locker room up 42-41.

The Bears managed to hold Brockport back for the first four minutes of the second half. Huestis scored eight points during the span, including two threes. At 15:50, junior guard Tony Arnold (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) scored from long range to tie the game at 54 and start another 8-0 run. Seconds later, a layup from sophomore guard Jacob Oka (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) put Brockport up for good. With 11:03 left, Cortez sank a three and Potsdam trailed just 62-60. However, the Eagles slowly increased their lead as time ticked away. A layup from freshman guard Alex Tavarez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) gave Brockport an 84-67 lead with 2:19 left and put the game out of reach.

Singh scored eight points to go with 10 rebounds and Kelly also finished with eight along with six boards. Senior guard Isaac Oduro Jr. (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) finished with seven points and four assists.

Arnold led Brockport with 27 points, seven boards and five assists. Oka added 17 points and freshman guard Caquan Wester (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) scored 14. Severson also reached double digits with 10 points.

The Bears are back in action at 3 p.m. Tuesday, when they travel to Hamilton College for a nonconference showdown.
