Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Lakers blank Bears

OSWEGO, N.Y.—Oswego State (8-6-1, 6-3-1 SUNYAC) scored three times in the second period and downed the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (6-8, 2-6) 5-0 on Saturday afternoon.
 
Defense controlled the play in the first period, limiting the teams to just 12 shots combined. However, Ashlyn McGrath gave the Lakers the lead with a goal at 11:38. Oswego went on the only power play late in the period, but was unable to capitalize. The Lakers held the edge in shots 7-5 through one and led 1-0.
 
Oswego scored three times in the second period. McGrath struck again with a power-play goal just 2:13 into the second period. Rheya Zemlak added to the lead at 10:38. Just 1:49 later, Kensie Malone made it a 4-0 contest. Each team had two power-play opportunities in the middle stanza and the Bears finished with a 7-6 advantage in shots.
 
Potsdam continued to battle evenly with the Lakers in the third period. With about six minutes to go, Oswego went on its final power play of the contest. The Bears killed the penalty, but the Lakers continued to press. With just 39 seconds left, Mack Hull closed the scoring, making it a 5-0 game.
 
Senior goalie Ellie Zurfluh (Arvada, Colo./Team Colorado) finished with 18 saves for Potsdam and Hannah Skavnak made 20 saves to earn the shutout.
 
The Bears finished 0-for-3 on the power play and Oswego was 1-for-5.
 
The Bears are back in action on Friday, when they take on Route 11 Rival SUNY Canton in an important SUNYAC contest at 3 p.m.
