MORRISVILLE, N.Y.—Sophomore forward
Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) scored two goals, including one just nine seconds in, as the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (5-11-1, 2-8 SUNYAC) defeated Morrisville State (3-14, 1-8) 4-0 on Wednesday night. Sophomore defenseman
Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers) and sophomore forward
Jeremy Quesnel (Alexandria, Ontario/Hawkesbury Hawkes) also scored for the Bears. Freshman goalie
Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) made 35 saves for his third career victory and first shutout.
Mahlmeister put the Mustangs on the defensive right off the opening faceoff. Sophomore assistant captain
Mason Hoehn (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) and senior forward
Jack Loran (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves) each assisted on the goal. Morrisville went on the power play just over four minutes later. The hosts tested Potsdam freshman goalie
Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) five times during the two minutes, but came away frustrated. A boarding penalty about nine minutes later, put the Bears on the advantage. At 14:26, Campbell double the lead with a helper from freshman defenseman
Eli Doughart-Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Navan Grads). Three minutes later an interference penalty gave the Bears another power play. Mahlmeister notched his second with an assist from junior captain
Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./Utica Jr. Comets). The Mustangs outshot Potsdam 13-11, but the Bears led 3-0 after 20 minutes.
Morrisville started the second period on the man advantage, but Potsdam killed the penalty again. Each team had another unsuccessful power play in the middle stanza and there was no scoring. The Bears edged the Mustangs in shots 9-8.
Morrisville had three more power plays in the third period, but couldn't crack Perno and Potsdam's defense. With 2:54 left, the Mustangs pulled goalie Ryan Creenan for an extra attacker. Just 1:23 later, Quesnel fired the puck into an empty net to close the scoring at 4-0.
Creenan finished with 19 saves. Morrisville was 0-for-7 on the power play and the Bears were 2-for-5.
Potsdam is back in action on Friday when the Bears travel to SUNY Canton for a 7 p.m. showdown.
