POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Canton (8-13-1) scored two power-play goals in the second period en route to a 5-0 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (5-12-1) on Saturday evening. Freshman goalie
Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) finished with 22 saves for the Bears.
The Kangaroos pressed the Bears early. They outshot Potsdam 18-12 in the first period. Canton grabbed the lead for good at 8:13 as sophomore forward Sam Brunton (Dryden, Ontario/South Shore Lumberjacks) found the back of the net. It was 1-0 after 20 minutes.
Penalty trouble hurt the Bears in the second period. They took four penalties and the Roos capitalized on two of them. Junior forward Colton Sipperley (Tampa, Fla./New Hampshire Monarchs) made it 2-0 on the power play at 2:25. At 9:05, senior forward Nic Herringer (Calgary, Alberta/UW-River Falls) added another marker on the man advantage. Potsdam had two power plays of its own, but trailed 3-0 after two periods.
Canton scored twice more in the third period. Sophomore forward Evan Pringle (Aurora, Ontario/Oakville Blades) made it 4-0 with an even-strength tally at 3:34. Herringer notched his second goal of the contest at 12:19 to close the scoring. At 9:41 the Bears were called for a trip and Pringle was awarded a penalty shot. However, Perno slid to his left to stuff the attempt.
Freshman goalie Trey Miller (Columbus, Ohio/Twin City Thunder) stopped all 39 shots to earn the shutout. Canton was 2-for-6 on the power play and the Bears were 0-2.
Potsdam is back in action at SUNY Brockport on Friday night at 7 p.m.
