POTSDAM, N.Y.—Graduate student forward
Megan Teachout (Auburn, N.Y./Oswego State) scored twice and the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (7-9, 3-7 SUNYAC) killed seven power plays as the Bears skated to a 2-1 victory over SUNY Canton (11-7, 5-6). Sophomore goalie
Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec/Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) finished with 27 saves for her fifth career win.
The first period saw no scoring, but five penalties. The Kangaroos outshot Potsdam 9-8, but were unable to take advantage of any of their three power plays. The Bears had two power plays, but had no better luck. Parent and Canton junior goalie Anna Maulson (Lac du Flambeau, Wis./Johnson & Wales) frustrated the offenses.
The penalties didn't stop in the second period, but the power-play opportunities tipped in Canton's favor. The Roos built a 13-8 shot advantage thanks in part to four more Potsdam penalties, Parent and her defense kept them off the board. At 4:09, Teachout picked off a Canton breakout pass. She went in all alone before fooling Maulson to make it 1-0. The score was unchanged at the second intermission, but Canton was on the power play.
Just 30 seconds into the third period, another Potsdam penalty gave the Roos a five-on-three advantage. Canton made the most of it and 18 seconds later, sophomore forward Danika Lalonde (Sudbury, Ontario/Barrie Jr. Sharks) knocked home a rebound to tie the game. The score remained even until the 11:08 mark. Teachout took the puck away from a Kangaroo in the Bears left corner. She weaved her way down the length of the ice and beat Maulson again, making it 2-1. With 1:38 left, Canton pulled its goalie for an extra attacker. The Roos tested Parent a final time before the contest expired.
Maulson finished with 19 saves. Canton was 1-for-8 on the power play and the Bears went 0-for-4.
The Bears are back in action for two SUNYAC matchups at Buffalo State next weekend.
