Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Déjà vu all over again, Bears blank Raiders 2-0

NASHUA, N.H.—Just as they did nearly a month ago, the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (6-6) shut out Rivier University (4-6-3) 2-0 on Friday evening. Freshman forward Jalynn Castro (Dexter, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) and junior forward Sara Barrett (Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) each scored for the Bears and junior goalie Hannah Barrett (Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) made 16 saves for her seventh career win and third career shutout.

After even play early on, Potsdam got on the board at 11:03. Castro struck with an assist from sophomore defenseman Rachelle Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles). The goal woke up Potsdam's offense, but they weren't able to add to the lead in the first. The Bears outshot the Raiders 12-6 in  the opening 20 minutes.

The Bears ramped up the pressure in the second period, outshooting the hosts 14-4. Potsdam doubled the lead at 16:01. Sophomore forward Alessia Marandola (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Jr. Hornets) set up Barrett to give the Bears all the insurance they'd need.

There was no scoring in the third period. Potsdam finished the contest with an 8-6 advantage in shots.

Rachel Symmes finished with 32 saves for Rivier. The Raiders went 0-for-3 on the power play.

As announced earlier, tomorrow night's games between the teams has been canceled due to the coming snow storm in New Hampshire.

The Bears are back in action next Friday, when they travel to Oswego State for a 7 p.m. SUNYAC contest.
