SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT.—Sophomore forward
Mason Hoehn (Highland's Ranch, Colo./Richmond Generals) scored two goals, including the overtime game-winner, to lift the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (4-10) to a 3-2 win over Saint Michael's College (7-9) on Saturday afternoon. Senior forward
Michael Olszewski (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Cobourg Cougars) also scored for the Bears and junior goalie
John Werber (Skillman, N.J./Team Maryland) made 30 saves for his third career win.
The Purple Knights were on a mission to avenge lasts night's loss from the drop of the puck. They tested Werber early and often. At the 9:51 mark, Potsdam was whistled for interference and Saint Mike's capitalized. Ty Bloom struck at 11:05 to make it a 1-0 contest. The Knights struck again just 1:08 later, getting an even-strength goal from Matti Tauriainen. The Bears generated some pressure of their own after the goal and went on their first power play with about six minutes left, but weren't able to break through. Saint Mike's outshot the Bears 17-9 and the first and led 2-0 after one.
The Bears outshot their hosts 10-5 in the second period, thanks in part to a power-play opportunity. However, there was no scoring in the middle 20 minutes.
The Bears rallied in the third period. Hoehn got Potsdam on the board just 40 seconds into the period with helpers from senior forward
Jack Loran (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves) and junior captain
Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./Utica Jr. Comets). The Knights took a slashing penalty at 6:05 and Potsdam took advantage. At 7:45, Olszewski buried the equalizer with helpers from freshman defenseman
Eli Doughart-Wood (St. Louis, Mo./Navan Grads) and freshman forward
Jakub Hall (Anchorage, Alaska/Richmond Generals). The teams traded chances for the rest of the contest. With nine seconds left, sophomore forward
Ryan Mahlmeister (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) was awarded a penalty shot. However, Saint Mike's goalie Marshall Murphy made the save to send the game to overtime.
The Bears got the only shot of overtime and it was the difference maker. Hoehn netted his second at 3:35 with an assist from sophomore defenseman
Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers).
Murphy finished with 30 saves for the Knights. Potsdam edged Saint Mike's in shots, 33-32, and was 1-for-3 on the man advantage. The Knights were 1-for-2 on the power play.
The victory improves Potsdam's all-time record against Saint Mike's to 15-0-1 dating back to a 6-4 win in Maxcy on November 2, 1984.
The Bears continue their New England road trip this week. They square off with Rivier University in Nashua, N.H. for the first time ever on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The next evening, Potsdam travels to Hooksett for its first meeting with Southern New Hampshire University since 2011, at 7:40 p.m.
