NASHUA, N.H.—Rivier University (7-7-2) scored twice in the third period to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (4-11) 2-0 on Tuesday night.
The Bears outshot the Raider 12-6 in the opening period, thanks in part to two power plays. Rivier had one of their own. However, freshman goalie
Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) and Raiders goalie Luke Newell kept the contest scoreless.
Each team traded two unsuccessful man advantages in the second period. Rivier finished with a 13-10 edge in shots, but the contest was still scoreless after 40 minutes.
The Raiders finally broke through at 11:10 of the third period. At 6:39, the Bears were called for an elbowing major. A few minutes later, Rivier hit the post, but didn't score. Eventually, Cormac Hayes found the back of the net. The Raiders managed to stay out in front the rest of the contest. With 1:34 left, Perno was pulled for an extra attacker. At the 20-second mark, Liam Hennessy scored an empty-net goal to seal the 2-0 win.
Perno finished with 33 saves, while Newell made 29 stops for the shutout. Rivier was 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Bears finished 0-for-5.
