POTSDAM, N.Y.—Plattsburgh State (6-6, 3-2 SUNYAC) shook off a first half deficit to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (2-10, 1-4) for a 100-90 victory on Tuesday evening. Senior guard
Colton Huestis (Ticonderoga, N.Y./Ticonderoga) led the Bears with a season-high 21 points and five rebounds.
The teams matched each other point for point through the first five minutes. A Cardinal layup tied the score at 10-10. Potsdam junior forward
Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) responded with a 3-pointer to ignite a 21-4 run. Junior guard
Jeff Williamson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) led the way with six points, while Kelly and senior guard
Colton Huestis (Ticonderoga, N.Y./Ticonderoga) each had five and freshman guard
Nicholas Cortez (New York, N.Y./Forest Hills) chipped in four. It was 31-14 at 9:13. The Cardinals chipped away at the lead the rest of the half and a three from junior guard Kevin Tabb (Brooklyn, N.Y./Thomas Jefferson) at the buzzer sent Plattsburgh into the locker room down just 46-42.
Potsdam fought to stay in front of the Cardinals early on. A layup from Huestis at 17:52 gave the Bears a 51-47 lead. Plattsburgh finally jumped back in front just over a minute later when a layup from senior guard Willard Anderson Jr. (Buffalo, N.Y./East) made it 54-53. He then extended the lead to four with a three at 16:10. Potsdam answered with buckets from Huestis and senior guard
Isaac Oduro Jr. (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) and the contest was tied 57-57 with 15:13 left. Small leads shifted back and forth over the next 14 minutes. There were 10 lead changes and five ties during the span. A jumper from junior guard Ikechukwo Ezike (Brooklyn, N.Y./Paul Robeson) hit a jumper to break an 87-87 tie and Plattsburgh closed the contest on a 13-3 run.
Kelly finished with 16 points for the Bears and Williamson scored 15 and grabbed six boards. Cortez and sophomore guard
Kaleb Lewis (Greenfield Center, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) also reached double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Tabb had a contest-best 27 points to go with six rebounds, three steals and three assists. Ezike scored 15 points and added seven rebounds and junior guard Jeremiah Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y./East New York Family Academy) had 14 points. Graduate student guard Dylan Trombley (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bears are back in action on Friday, when they host SUNY Geneseo at 7:30 p.m.
