Bengals down Bears in SUNYAC opener, 3-1

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Buffalo State (9-8, 1-0 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (7-4, 0-1) 3-1 on Friday evening to open SUNYAC play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A service ace from sophomore setter Rachel Madore (Peru, N.Y./Peru) got the Bears within 8-7, but the Bengals countered with a 14-5 run and took set one 25-20.
  • The teams battled to a 19-19 score in set two, but the Bears finished on a 6-0 stretch to take the set 25-19. Senior outside hitter Alyssa Adams (Jamestown, N.Y./Randolph) had two kills during the run.
  • Buffalo State started fast and never let up in set three, winning 25-15 for a 2-1 lead.
  • The Bengals did the same in the decisive fourth set, winning 25-17 to claim the match.
     
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Senior captain Megan Henry (Candor, N.Y./Candor) led the Bears with 15 kills and a block.
  • Adams finished with 11 kills and an ace.
  • Junior setter Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) had 24 assists, 12 digs, two aces and a block.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) contributed 10 digs and Madore added nine.

The Bears finish their Western New York swing tomorrow with a 1 p.m. match at SUNY Fredonia.
