Big comeback gives Bears 3-2 victory at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y.—A big comeback by the SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (8-4, 1-1) gave the Bears a 3-2 win at SUNY Fredonia (8-12, 1-1) on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears led for much of the first set, but found themselves down 24-23 before rallying for the 26-24 win. Senior captain Megan Henry (Candor, N.Y./Candor) clinched the set with a kill.
  • The second set was the mirror image of the first, with the Bears holding a 24-23 edge before falling 27-25. Senior outside hitter Alyssa Adams (Jamestown, N.Y./Randolf) and sophomore outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) each had three kills during the set.
  • A 10-2 Fredonia run broke open set three. The Blue Devils won 25-11 and were up 2-1.
  • Potsdam was on the brink, down 15-11 in set four, but closed the game on a 14-3 run to tie the match with a 25-18 decision. Henry had four kills and Adams had three in the set.
  • The Blue Devils opened the fifth set on a 6-0 run. However, a furious comeback gave the Bears a 15-13 set win and a 3-2 match victory. Henry added another four kills in the fifth.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Henry finished with 15 kills, 19 digs and an ace.
  • Adams had 12 kills, three blocks and two aces.
  • Junior setter Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) contributed 35 assists, 16 digs and an ace.
  • Prest registered 11 kills and 17 digs.  
  • Senior middle hitter Santara Hart (Meridian, Idaho/Meridian) rounded out the leaders with four blocks.
  • The victory is the Bears' first ever at Fredonia.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears are back home on Friday, when they host Morrisville State at 6 p.m.
