Bears dethrone Monarchs in season opener, 4-1

PITTSTON, PA.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (1-0) scored in every period en route to a 4-1 win at King's College in its season opener on Friday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears jumped on King's just 3:24 into the contest as freshman forward Garrett McCabe (London, Ontario/Brantford 99ers) scored his first collegiate goal off a King's turnover.
  • The Monarchs tied the game 2:05 into the second period. Cameron Kin Bauer finished a feed from Jayden Baldinelli.
  • Graduate student assistant captain Jack Loran (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves) put the Bears back in front for good 2-1 at 7:24 of the second period with assists from freshmen forwards Owen Watson (Smiths Falls, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears) and Finnegan Kilmurray (Ottawa, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears). The assists were the first points of the duo's careers.
  • Sophomore defenseman Jack McCandless (Victor, N.Y./Richmond Generals) added an insurance marker at 12:13 of the third period. Sophomore forwards Jakub Hall (Anchorage, Alaska/Richmond Generals) and Will O'Brien (Jefferson Hills, Pa./HC Rhode Island) each picked up assists.
  • Freshman forward Andrew Blanchard (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Pennsylvania Huntsmen) sealed the win with an empty-net-goal with 11 seconds remaining.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears outshot King's 40-29.
  • The Monarch's were 0-for-3 on the power play and Potsdam went 0-for-1.
  • Bears sophomore goalie Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) picked up where he left off last season, stopping 28 shots for his seventh career victory.
  • Matt Bidini turned aside 36 Potsdam attempts in goal for the Monarchs.

The Bears head to top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Hobart College for a 4 p.m. contest tomorrow afternoon.
