POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (2-0) defeated Rivier University (0-2) 6-0 for its second shutout in as many games to open the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Graduate student forward Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) got the Bears on the board just 2:21 into the contest. Sophomore forward Isabel Boyd (Norwood, N.Y./Adirondack 46ers) picked up the assist.
• Sophomore forward Jalynn Castro (Dexter, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) scored a power-play goal at 6:22 with assists from junior defenseman Victoria Proulx (Rockland, Ontario/Post University) and senior captain Sara Barrett (Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Eagles).
• Junior defenseman Rachelle Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) made it 3-0 at 5:01 of the second period. Holmes and freshman forward Karenhatironhtha Johnson (Akwesasne, Ontario/Ottawa 67's) assisted on the goal.
• Junior forward Rebecca Cain (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles) scored at 16:54 with assists from junior forward Josie Purdy (White Lake, Nova Scotia/Ontario Hockey Academy) and graduate student forward Rylee Garrow (Akwesasne, Quebec/St. Lawrence Steel).
• Boyd won the very next faceoff and Castro picked up the puck and scored her second goal on a wrister from the slot to make it 5-0.
• Holmes knocked home her second of the game at 7:43 of the third period with helpers from Boyd and sophomore defenseman Elise Clifford (Auburn, N.Y./Syracuse Valley Eagles).

 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• The Bears outshot the Raiders 39-17.
• Potsdam was 1-for-2 on the power play and for the second day in a row killed all six of their opponent's power-play opportunities.
• Senior goalie Hannah Barrett (Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Eagles) stopped all 17 shots she faced for her ninth career win and fourth career shutout.
• Senior goalie Rachel Symmes (Chugiak, Alaska/Chugiak) made 33 saves for Rivier.
• Holmes finished with two goals and an assist.
• Castro had two goals.
• Boyd added two assists.
• The Bears are 6-0 against the Raiders in the all-time series.
