POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (2-1) rallied for a 4-3 victory in their home opener against SUNY Fredonia (0-3) on Friday night. After the nonconference contest, the Bears honored seniors
Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./Utica Jr. Comets),
Andrew Lantry (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves) and
John Werber (Skillman, N.J./Team Maryland) for their careers on Senior Night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- While on a five-minute power play at 4:48, freshman defenseman Owen Arnold (Highland, Mich./Blind River) knocked the puck away from a Bear to senior forward Ryan Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska/Boston Junior Rangers). Bailey went the length of the ice and tucked the puck between the pads of Werber to open the scoring.
- With 1:39 left in the first period, graduate student assistant captain Jack Loran (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves) buried a big rebound off a shot from junior forward Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) to tie the game.
- At 9:35 of the second period, graduate student forward David Sudbrink (Nolensville, Tenn./Ogden Mustangs) finished a pass from freshman forward Nolan Ring (South Porcupine, Ontario/Timmins Rock) in the slot to make it 2-1 Blue Devils.
- At 14:44 of the second period, sophomore forward Jakub Hall (Anchorage, Alaska/Richmond Generals) blasted a rebound off a Loran shot to tie the score while on the power play. Rose picked up the second assist.
- Just 17 seconds later, junior forward Ethan Pitzman (Homer, Alaska/Northern Colorado Eagles) dug the puck out of the left corner and found sophomore forward Dillion Schmidt (Sun Prairie, Wis./Oregon Tradesman) in the high slot. Schmidt tossed it toward the goal to make it 3-2. Junior forward Jack Schlifke (Penfield, N.Y./Boston Junior Rangers) had the second assist.
- At 12:41 of the third period, junior forward Max Klanow (Holly, Mich./Hawkesbury Hawks) tied the game with an assist from junior assistant captain Michael Campbell (Toronto, Ontario/Jersey Whalers).
- At 16:27, Loran scored the game-winner after picking up a loose puck in the neutral zone and wristing it into the top right corner of the net.
- Fredonia pulled junior goalie Charles-Anthony Barbeau (St. Remi, Quebec/N. Colorado Eagles) with 2:05 left, but the score was unchanged.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Fredonia outshot the Bears 39-20.
- Barbeau finished with 16 saves for the Blue Devils.
- Werber stopped 36 shots for his fourth career win.
- Fredonia was 1-for-9 on the man advantage and Potsdam was 1-for-3.
