Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) made 61 saves and helped the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (3-2-1) to a 2-1 victory against No. 11 Elmira College (6-4) in overtime on Tuesday evening. Graduate student forward
Kaylee Merrill (Wasilla, Alaska/Anchorage North Stars) scored her NCAA-era program record 62nd goal and fellow graduate student forward
Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) buried the game-winner with 17 seconds left in the extra session.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Parent kept her team in the game for over three periods. Merrill struck with a shot from above the left faceoff circle at 13:15 of the third to make it 1-0. Senior forward Megan Mills (Mono, Ontario/North York Storm) and Holmes each assisted on the goal.
- The Soaring Eagles got even just 3:37 later as junior defenseman Gabby Dougherty (Chelsea, Mich./Syracuse, N.Y.) beat a screened Parent on a shot from the right point.
- After five more saves by Parent in overtime, Holmes ripped a pass from junior forward Alessia Marandola (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Jr. Hornets) into the back of the net for the game-winner. Sophomore defensemen Jessika Bullock (Norfolk, N.Y./Adirondack 46ers) had the second assist.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Elmira outshot the Bears 62-18.
- The Soaring Eagles were 0-for-3 on the power play and Potsdam went 0-for-1.
- Parent's 61 saves are a career-high and the third most in program history.
- Senior goalie Emily Finach (Hamburg, N.Y./Lindenwood University) finished with 16 saves for Elmira.
- Merrill's goal moves her past Jordan Ott '17 for the NCAA-era program record. It also moved her into sole possession of third place on Potsdam's NCAA-era scoring list with 86 (62g, 24a) points.
- The victory was the first over the Soaring Eagles since February 25, 2012, ending a 10-game losing streak.
FACEOFF AGAINST CANCER
- Prior to the game, the Bears had a ceremony to welcome back Megan Mills to the lineup on Face Off Against Cancer Night. The senior has been battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She picked up her sixth career point in the contest.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Potsdam heads to No. 9 Oswego State for an important SUNYAC contest on Friday at 7 p.m. The game is the Bears' last until January 3.
