CORTLAND, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (4-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) started quickly and never let up in a 68-39 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (3-4, 0-1) on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Red Dragons opened the game on a 7-0 run and had a 16-8 lead after 10 minutes. Senior guard Barbara Bruno (Bronx, N.Y./Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology) scored four points for the Bears.
- Cortland continued to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring Potsdam 19-10. The hosts led 35-18 at the half. Senior forward Jenna Cotter (Johnson City, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) scored six points in the second and junior forward DaeLynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) had four.
- The Red Dragons increased their lead with a 20-9 third quarter and led 55-27 after 30 minutes.
- Cortland edged Potsdam 13-12 in the final quarter to close out the 68-39 win. Bruno, sophomore guard Sara Richards (AuSable Valley, N.Y./AuSable Valley) and freshman center Reese Shambo (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./AuSable Valley) each had four points in the fourth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Cortland outshot the Bears 39.4-percent to 36.2 and hit nine 3-pointers.
- The Red Dragons also out rebounded Potsdam 41-30.
- Bruno and Cotter each scored 10 points, while Alcock finished with eight.
- Joleen Lusk had a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds on to lead Cortland and Jackie Funk scored 14 points.
