No. 15 Red Dragons edge Bears in OT, 2-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.—No. 15 SUNY Cortland (16-4-2, 11-3-1 SUNYAC) came from behind to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (9-10, 5-7) 2-1 in overtime on Friday night. Graduate student forward Megan Teachout (Auburn, N.Y./Oswego State) scored for the Bears and sophomore goalie Magalie Parent (Trois-Rivières, Quebec Les Diablos – Cégep de Trois-Rivières) made 33 saves.

Teachout put Potsdam up 1-0 just 4:23 into the contest. The Red Dragons turned over the puck near the net and the forward buried it. The Bears continued to have good energy after the goal and tested Cortland junior goalie Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) 10 more times in the period, but couldn't add to the lead. Each team killed a penalty.

Junior forward Meggan Cramer (Cicero, N.Y./Syracuse Nationals) tied the game tied the game at 4:25 of the second period. She caught a long pass in the neutral zone and went in all alone on the left side. The Bears had the only power play of the second period, but the Red Dragons finished with a 13-6 advantage in shots. It was 1-1 after 40 minutes.

Cortland continued to ramp up the pressure in the third period. However, Parent stopped 15 shots to send the contest to overtime.

The Bears fired twice more on Goergen, early in the extra five minutes, but it was the Red Dragons netting the game-winner. Senior forward Jillian Hlasnick (Olean, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) knocked home a rebound at the 1:20 mark to end the contest.

Goergen made 24 saves. Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.

The two teams go at it again tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
