No. 15 SLU overpowers Bears in season opener

CANTON, N.Y.-15th-ranked St. Lawrence University (2-0) started quickly en route to an 18-5 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (0-1) on Thursday afternoon. Junior attackman Owen Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) led the Bears with two goals and an assist.
 
The Saints struck just 41 seconds into the game and built an 8-0 lead through the first quarter. The Bears went on a 3-0 run early in the second quarter getting two goals from Owen Walsh and one from graduate student midfielder Peyton Walsh (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa).
 
Junior captain Cobie Cree (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) and sophomore midfielder Tyler Gould (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) opened the third quarter with back-to-back markers to close the gap to 12-5. The Saints scored the last six goals of the contest.
 
Judge Murphy led the Saints with four goals and four assists. Daniel Mahoney had a goal and three helpers. John Mahoney scored three goals and added an assisted on one and Cam Croasdaile rounded out the leaders with three goals.
 
Junior captain Liam O'Neil (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) allowed eight goals and made two saves in the first quarter. Sophomore Saka Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) played the last three quarters, allowing 10 goals and making 11 saves. Michael Marinello started in goal for SLU, making eight saves and allowing five goals over the first three quarters. Andrew Vona started the fourth quarter in goal for the Saints and stopped three shots in 11:29. Heath Mann didn't face a shot in the last 3:31.
 
Sophomore faceoff specialist Drew Costello (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) won 10 of his 26 chances in the circle and had three ground balls.  Junior captain Cole Slavin (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) had two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
 
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, February 28, when they head to Utica University for a 4 p.m. contest.
