No. 5 Lakers pull away from Bears in second half

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Fifth-ranked Oswego State (20-1, 14-0 SUNYAC) pulled away from the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (3-19, 2-12) 98-72 on Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Isaac Oduro Jr. (Queens, N.Y./Christ the King) scored a career-high 20 points to lead the Bears. Junior forward Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) added 18 points.

A layup from Oduro at 15:46 gave Potsdam a 7-4 lead, but the Lakers roared back with a 14-0 run. Junior guard Ahkee Anderson (Greenport, N.Y./Center Moriches) hit a three at 13:22 and Oswego was up 18-7. On the brink of being knocked out early, the Bears clawed their way back to within 20-18 with an 11-2 stretch. Kelly had six of the points and a dunk to spark Potsdam. The Lakers answered with another run, this time 15-5 for their biggest lead of the half at 35-23. The Bears continued to battle and a layup from senior guard Colton Huestis (Ticonderoga, N.Y./Ticonderoga) got the Bears within 43-40 with 35 seconds left. The Lakers led 45-40 at the break.

Anderson opened the second half with another three to extend the lead to eight. Potsdam got within three a final time as a layup from freshman guard Nicholas Cortez (New York, N.Y./Forest Hills) made it 51-48 at 17:05. It was all Lakers the rest of the way. A late charge broke the contest open for the 98-72 final.

Cortez and Huestis finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Anderson led all scorers with 22 points. Graduate student forward Julien Crittendon (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) scored 14 points for the Lakers and fellow graduate student forward Jamal Achille (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) had 13 points and eight boards. Senior forward Cartier Bowman (Trenton, N.J./The Patrick School) contributed a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Bears are back in action on Friday night when they travel to Fredonia for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
