Bears fall to Lakers in OT despite career-high from Howard, 63-58

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Oswego State (12-8, 8-6  SUNYAC) rallied late before defeating the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (7-13, 3-11) 63-58 in overtime. Graduate student forward Jakia Howard (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) led all scorers with a career-high 29 points.
 
Potsdam found itself trailing 10-6 at the 4:38 mark. Howard scored on a layup 11 seconds later to start a 9-0 run. Two free throws from junior guard Mikayla Shipley (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) gave the Bears a 15-10 lead at 2:24. They led 15-13 after one. Shipley had seven points in the opening 10 minutes and Howard had six.
 
The Lakers regained the lead at 8:36 of the second quarter. Sophomore forward Giavanna White-Principio (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) made it 18-17 Oswego with a layup. Junior forward Jenna Cotter (Johnson City, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) countered with back-to-back buckets and The Bears were back up 21-18 at 7:26. Over the next few minutes, the Bears grabbed the lead and Oswego continued to get even. The Lakers then put together a 9-0 run to build 30-23 lead at 3:06. A layup from junior guard Barbara Bruno (Bronx, N.Y./Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology) and back-to-back baskets from Howard closed the gap to 30-29 at the break. Howard and Cotter each scored six in the second.
 
Howard opened the third with a three to put Potsdam back in front 32-30. The Bears continued to strike from long distance. Howard hit another three at 5:07 and junior guard Zavia Jaime (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) followed at 3:43 and Potsdam led 41-36. The Bears were up 45-41 after 30 minutes. Howard scored 10 points in the third and Jaime had five.
 
The fourth quarter featured a low scoring, defensive play. A jumper from Howard at 2:51 gave the Bears a 51-44 advantage, but the Lakers weren't done. Oswego closed regulation on an 8-1 run, including a three from junior guard Macey DeOrdio (Nedrow, N.Y./Onondaga Central) to tie the score at 52 with 12 seconds left.
 
There were six lead changes in the first four minutes of overtime, but a jumper from junior guard Zhane Holmes (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira) gave the Lakers the lead for good with 42 seconds left. Four free throws sealed Oswego's 63-58 win.
 
Shipley finished with nine points for the Bears. Cotter had six points and 10 rebounds.
 
DeOrdio led the Lakers with 21 points. White-Principio added nine points and 12 boards. Junior forward Elaina Johnson (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) had eight.
 
The Bears head to Western New York next weekend. Potsdam faces Fredonia at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Buffalo State at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
