Red Dragons surge past Bears, LaDue reaches 100 points

POTSDAM, N.Y.-A second half burst lifted SUNY Oneonta (2-4, 1-0 SUNYAC) over the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-3, 0-2) 22-14 on Tuesday afternoon. Senior captain Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) had a career-high seven points on five goals and two assists. The performance made her the 14th Bear to reach 100 points. Graduate student midfielder Anita Reitano (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) scored three goals, giving her 206 points for her career. She is now just 12 points away from tying the program record.
 
The Red Dragons built a 2-0 lead at 12:20 of the first quarter on goals from junior attack Ellie Downey (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and senior midfielder Marissa Evans (Jamesville, N.Y./LaFayette). LaDue got the Potsdam on the board at 10:46. After another Red Dragon marker from senior attack Lauren Mancini (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), graduate student midfielder Taylor Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) and LaDue scored to tie the game at 3-3 at the 8:08 mark. Evans struck again at 4:58, but the Bears answered with three straight to close the quarter up 6-4. LaDue set up junior attack Mallory Marks (Brownville, N.Y./General Brown) at 4:01. Reitano scored at 1:38 and LaDue buried her third with 1:05 left.
 
Junior attack Elizabeth Doherty (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and sophomore midfielder Lindsey Townes (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) got Oneonta even 2:41 into the third quarter. The Bears answered with four straight to grab a 10-6 lead at 7:02, starting with an own goal by the Red Dragons. Junior midfielder Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) scored the next two, with the second coming on a helper from LaDue. LaDue then closed the run with a goal, giving her 100 points for her career. However, Oneonta countered with a 5-0 run, including four to close the half. The contest was tied 10-10 at the break.
 
Junior midfielder Cassidy Moore (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) put the Red Dragons back up by one to start the second half, but Marks answered at 9:12. Mancini made it 12-11 at 7:10, but Reitano tied the game a final time at 6:35. Oneonta grabbed the lead for good with the next four tallies, including two goals from Townes and one each from Mancini and Evans. LaDue netted her fifth of the game with one second left and Potsdam trailed 16-13 after 45 minutes.
 
Oneonta outscored Potsdam 6-1 in the fourth quarter. Mancini netted another two as did senior midfielder Margaret Byrne (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington). Downey and Moore had the other two goals. Reitano got the Bears' last goal at 8:31.
 
Freshman goalie Allyson Bruns (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) allowed 16 goals and made eight saves in the first 45 minutes. Sophomore Jane Olszewski (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) made four saves and allowed six goals in the fourth quarter. Pierce had a game-high 12 draw controls for Potsdam.
 
Senior goalie Courtney Gallagher (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) allowed six goals and made two stops in the first quarter for Oneonta. Junior Julia Hawkins (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) made eight saves and allowed eight goals in the last 45 minutes to pick up the win. Mancini led all scorers with nine points on seven goals and two assists and Moore contributed 10 draw controls.
 
The Bears are back in action on Saturday at 11 a.m., when they host Buffalo State in another SUNYAC contest.
