Bears slay Bengals, Reitano sets scoring record

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (4-8, 1-6) blew out Buffalo State (6-7, 2-5) in the second half for a 20-11 victory on Friday afternoon. Graduate student attack Anita Reitano (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) led the way with nine points on four goals and five assists to establish herself as the program's new scoring record holder. She now has 140 goals and 87 assists for 227 points. Senior captain Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) also had an outstanding day with five goals and two assists for seven points to go with nine draw controls and four ground balls. Freshman attack Abby Kraus (Buffalo, N.Y./Frontier) and junior attack Mallory Marks (Brownville, N.Y./General Brown) each scored four goals. Junior midfielder Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) scored twice, collected four draw controls and caused two turnovers.
 
Sophomore attack Emilee Josker (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) gave the Bengals the lead just 58 seconds into the contest. LaDue answered 45 seconds later and set up Marks for a man-up goal and the lead at 10:24. Josker and senior midfielder Sarah Fineour (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca East) countered with two goals for Buffalo State's last lead at 3:33. LaDue tied the game at 2:18 and it was 3-3 after 15 minutes.
 
Reitano netted her first goal of the day at 13:48 of the second quarter and set the new program scoring mark. LaDue buried her third at 12:20 for a 5-3 advantage. Freshman midfielder Brooklyn Hill (Six Nations, Ontario/McKinnon Park) netted a man-up goal at 9:36 and sophomore attack Vanessa Willick (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville East) knotted the score again at 8:48. The Bears took the lead for good with a 3-0 run. Kraus struck at 8:05 and 5:18 and Reitano added a man-up goal at 2:22 for an 8-5 edge. Josker got one back with 15 seconds left in the half and it was an 8-6 contest at the break.
 
The physical play picked up in the second half and saw numerous cards. Hill scored her second at 9:56 of the third quarter to get the Bengals within one. Reitano set up Kraus and Marks for man-up tallies and a 10-7 lead at 7:49. Josker and junior midfielder Laura Rinow Lakeview, N.Y./Frontier) scored the next two to close the gap to 10-9, but Buffalo State didn't get any closer.  Potsdam put the game away with a 7-0 run. Marks, LaDue, Reitano and Kraus scored in a 2:07 span, the latter two coming while a man-up, and the Bears led 14-9 after 45 minutes.
 
Reitano assisted on another LaDue man-up goal at 14:34 of the fourth quarter. She then fed Marks at 13:10 before completing the run with her own man-up marker at 11:46. Potsdam led 17-9. Rinow slowed the momentum with a goal from Buffalo State at 8:19. LuDue assisted on a goal from sophomore midfielder Megan MacWilliams (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) 55 seconds later. Junior attack Sage Running Rabbit (Siska, Alberta/Strathmore) got a final goal for Buffalo State at 4:01, but Pierce closed the scoring with two man-up goals in a row. Freshman attack Kawenokwiio Mitchell (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) assisted on the second.
 
Sophomore goalie Jane Olszewski (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) picked up the win for the Bears with seven saves and 10 goals allowed in 51:12. Sophomore Olivia Minarich (Albany, N.Y./Albany) stopped a shot and allowed a goal in 8:48.
 
Josker led the Bengals with four goals, while Hill contributed two goals, an assist and five draw controls. Rinow had two goals.
 
Freshman goalie Brielle Lum (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) made seven saves and allowed 11 goals for Buffalo State in 31:17. Sophomore Moira Penot (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) allowed nine goals and stopped four shots in the other 28:43.
 
It's a quick turnaround for the Bears, as they head to Fredonia for an 11 a.m. game tomorrow morning.
