Fredonia overpowers Bears

FREDONIA, N.Y.—SUNY Fredonia (5-10, 1-7 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (4-9, 1-7) 20-5 on Saturday afternoon. Senior captain Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) led the Bears with three goals and junior midfielder Tessa Pierce (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had one. Graduate student attack Anita Reitano (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) registered a goal and an assist to increase her career total to 229 points.
 
The Blue Devils got off to a fast start, scoring four times in the opening 2:58. Pierce got the Bears on the board at 8:07 with a man-up goal assisted by Reitano. Fredonia responded with the next three goals, including two to close the first quarter with a 6-1 lead.
 
After another Blue Devil tally 45 seconds into the second quarter, Potsdam got two back. LaDue scored on free position and Reitano made it 7-3 at 11:52. However, Fredonia pulled away with the next six straight to take a 13-3 advantage into the break.
 
The Blue Devils opened the second half with three more goals. LaDue scored her second of the contest at 4:19 and then her third at 1:21. With a second left in the quarter, Fredonia added another goal for a 17-5 lead after 45 minutes.
 
The Blue Devils added three more in the fourth quarter to close out the 20-5 win.
 
Freshman Allyson Bruns (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) made three saves and allowed nine goals in 30:33. Sophomore Olivia Minarich (Albany, N.Y./Albany) allowed 11 goals and made two saves.
 
Sydney Buchko led Fredonia with five goals and three assists for eight points. Noelle Mendez added four goals and an assist and Cailin Karalus scored three times. Goalie Jessica Kowalski made nine saves to earn the win.
 
The Bears are back in action in Wednesday afternoon when they host Plattsburgh State at 4 p.m.
