POTSDAM, N.Y.—First place SUNY New Paltz (24-4, 10-0 SUNYAC) took both games from the SUNY Potsdam softball team (9-15, 2-8) on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks took game one 9-2 and then downed the Bears in a 5-1 victory in the finale.
The Bears jumped out in front in the bottom of the first of the opener. Graduate student first baseman
Anna Grottola (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) doubled to left to bring in junior second baseman
Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) for a 1-0 lead.
New Paltz answered with three runs in to top of the second. Senior catcher Kelly Marmorowski (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Sophomore third baseman Jacee Filancia (East Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) followed with a two-run single to put the Hawks up for good.
In the bottom of the third, Bears senior catcher
Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) knocked in freshman right fielder
Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) to close the gap to 3-2.
It was all Hawks after that as they scored two in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Junior pitcher
Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) (4-7) allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 12 hits in six innings, while striking out three for the Bears. Freshman
Hannah Agans (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) allowed a run on two hits and struck out one in the final inning.
Dobransky was 2-for-4 with a run. Pleat was 2-for-3 with a run. Grottola was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Bennett was 1-for-3 with an RBI and graduate student left fielder
Emily Beck (Lowville, N.Y./Beaver River) was 1-for-3.
Senior pitcher Lindsay Roman (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) (11-3) allowed the two runs on eight hits for the complete game victory. Filancia was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Junior designated player Jackie Rometo (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior shortstop Rhionna Bianchini (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Marmorowski finished 1-for-2 with two RBI.
In game two, the Hawks got two in the first, two in the third and one in the seventh. The first run came in on an RBI single from sophomore left fielder Kelsey O'Brien (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) and the second on a Bianchini ground out. The next two runs came from an RBI single from senior first baseman Jillian Shelbourne (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford and a sac fly from Bianchini. Bianchini added another RBI on a fielder's choice in the Hawks final at-bats.
New Paltz junior pitcher Sydney Waldon (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) had a no-hitter going until one out in the bottom of the seventh when Bears junior third baseman
Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) singled to left to break it up. Junior centerfielder
Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) followed with an infield single. Bennett ended the shutout with a sac fly to right that scored freshman pinch runner
Alivia Dean (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George). Waldon finally ended the threat and the contest with a strikeout.
Senior
Anna Brown (Ellenburg Depot, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) allowed five runs on 12 hits and two strikeouts in the complete game for Potsdam.
Waldon (12-1) allowed one unearned run on the two hits, while striking out 10.
Filancia was 3-for-4 with two runs. O'Brien was 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI. Shelbourne was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Bianchini had three RBI despite going 0-for-3.
As all four of this week's Morrisville State contests have been canceled, the Bears next scheduled contests are Friday, when they host Brockport for two at 3 and 5 p.m.
