POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (11-15, 4-8 SUNYAC) swept SUNY Brockport (8-20, 2-8) for the second year in a row on Friday evening. The Bears took game one 7-5 and game two 10-2 in five innings.
The Golden Eagles started with two runs in the top of the first in the opener. Sophomore second baseman Riley Barrett (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) scored on an error. Junior designated player Olivia Simone (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) followed with an RBI single. Brockport extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the third as Simone picked up an RBI on a ground out.
The Bears batted around in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs on eight hits. Junior centerfielder
Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) opened the scoring with an RBI single to plate junior shortstop
Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes). LaForest then scored on a wild pitch. Junior pitcher
Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) tied the game with an infield single that scored Moscarello. Senior third baseman
Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./North Collins) put the Bears in front for good with a single to center that scored freshman pinch runner
Karissa Donnelly (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Morristown). Freshman right fielder
Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) drove in junior second baseman
Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science & Innovation) and Holmes to make it 6-3.
Dobransky scored an insurance run on wild pitch in the bottom of sixth to extend the advantage to four. Brockport rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh. Junior right fielder Jackie DuTot (Long Island, N.Y./Sayville) doubled in the first run. Freshman pinch hitter Tori Angelo (Buffalo, N.Y./Starpoint) hit the ball hard toward short. It took a funny hop past LaForest for an RBI single. Bears freshman
Hannah Agans (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) then relieved Cottrill and slammed the door. She struck out two hitters and senior catcher
Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) gunned down a runner at second to end the contest.
Cottrill (5-7) allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits, while striking out four in six innings. Agans k'd both batters she faced for her second save.
Dobransky was 2-for-4 with two runs. Pleat was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Graduate student first baseman
Anna Grottola (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) was 2-for-3 with a run and a walk. Bennett was 1-for-3. LaForest and Moscarello were each 2-for-3 with a run and Moscarello had an RBI. Cottrill and Holmes were each 1-for-3 with an RBI and Holmes added a run.
Freshman pitcher Kendall Phillips (Bergen, N.Y./Byron-Bergen) (5-6) allowed seven runs on 12 hits and struck out seven.
Simone led the Golden Eagles, going 1-for-3 with two RBI. DuTot was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Angelo was 1-for-1 with an RBI.
In the finale, Bennett doubled in Donnelly to open the scoring in the bottom of the first. Brockport tied the game in the top of the second on a wild pitch.
The Bears took the lead again in the bottom of the second as graduate student left fielder
Emily Beck (Lowville, N.Y./Beaver River) scored on a wild pitch. A two-run single from Moscarello made it 4-1 in the bottom of the third fourth. Sophomore third baseman Aubrey Ennis (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly) singled in Brockport's second run in the top of the fourth.
Potsdam scored three times in the bottom of the fourth. Grottola drove in Drobransky and Holmes on a single up the middle. LaForest followed with an infield hit to bring in Grottola. It was 7-2 through four.
The Bears added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to close out the victory. Dobransky knocked in senior pinch runner
Hope Sandor (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem). Pleat drove in Beck with a single. On the same play, Pleat got in a rundown, allowing to Dobransky to score the final run.
Graduate student
Sierra Ashley (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) (4-4) allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits in four innings. Senior
Anna Brown (Ellenburg Depot, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) allowed three hits in one inning.
Dobransky was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Pleat was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Grottola was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Bennett was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Beck was 2-for-2 with two runs and Holmes was 1-for-3 with a run.
Junior Fiona Gibiser (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) (0-5) allowed 10 runs, seven earned on 15 hits in 4.2 innings for the Golden Eagles.
Sophomore second baseman Caitlyn Dailey (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) was 2-for-3 and Ennis was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow at noon, when they host SUNY Geneseo on Senior Day.
