POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (13-17) swept SUNY Canton on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears took game one 14-6 and game two 9-1. The two victories give the Bears 13 wins for the season, matching the program single-season record.
The Bears scored three times in the bottom of the first and never trailed. Junior second baseman
Kaylee Dobransky (New Britain, Conn./CREC Academy of Science and Innovation) led off with a double and scored on a ground out from senior catcher
Kelsey Bennett (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond). Graduate student first baseman
Anna Grottola (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) scored after junior shortstop
Kaylee LaForest (Cohoes, N.Y./Cohoes) walked and got into a rundown. Senior third baseman
Rebecca Holmes (Lawtons, N.Y./North Collins) then singled to score LaForest and make it 3-0.
The Kangaroos got two back in the top of the second. Freshman centerfielder Talor Ferrucci (Fort Hunter, N.Y./Fonda-Fultonville) drove in two runs with a single of up the middle. In the bottom of the inning, Dobransky doubled again to score junior centerfielder
Danielle Moscarello (Arlington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) and made it 4-2.
The Bears got three more in both the third and fourth innings. LaForest scored on an error after a single from Holmes. Junior pitcher
Lexie Cottrill (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) then doubled in Holmes. Cottrill came in on an error. It was 7-2 after three. Ferrucci knocked in another run on a ground out in the top of the fourth.
Bennett drove in Grottola with a double in the bottom of the fourth. Bennett charged home on a LaForest stolen base and then LaForest scored on an error to make it 10-3.
The Kangaroos rallied in the top of the fifth. Senior first baseman Sophia Gunderson (Bethpage, N.Y./Bayside) scored on an error. Junior pitcher Caitlyn Reed (Massena, N.Y./Massena) drove in another run with a double. Junior shortstop Sarah Balcom (Sandy Creek, N.Y./Sandy Creek) capped the rally with an RBI single to left and it was 10-6.
The Bears added a run in the bottom of the fifth on a Bennett double to left that scored Grottola. They then closed out the contest with three in the bottom of the sixth. Beck drove in Holmes with a single. Cottrill scored on an error and Beck scored on a wild pitch.
Cottrill (6-8) allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits, while striking out four in five innings. Freshman
Hannah Agans (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits in one inning.
Dobransky was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Grottola was 1-for-3 with three runs. Bennett finished 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI. LaForest was 1-for-2 with three runs and two walks. Holmes went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Cottrill was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Moscarello and Beck were each 1-for-4 with a run and Moscarello added an RBI.
Reed (5-16) allowed 14 runs, 10 earned, on 14 hits and three walks. Balcom was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Ferrucci was 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Dobransky scored on a Grottola ground out in the bottom of the first of game two to open the scoring. Potsdam added three more in the third. Freshman pinch runner
Karissa Donnelly (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Morristown) scored on a wild pitch. Bennett followed with a single that scored freshman right fielder
Sophia Pleat (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Grottola to make it 4-0.
Freshman designated player Ace Rogers (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) got the Roos on the board with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth. The Bears answered with three in the bottom of the inning. Holmes scored on a fielder's choice. Moscarello scored on a Donnelly stolen base attempt and Pleat singled to bring in Donnelly.
Bennett scored Potsdam's fifth run in the fifth. She stole second base and continued to third safely. She then got in a run down until she broke free to cross the plate. Senior pitcher
Anna Brown (Ellenburg Depot, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) ended the contest with a single to right the brought in LaForest.
Brown (3-5) allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out four in five innings.
Dobransky, LaForest and Holmes were each 1-for-3 with a run. Pleat was 1-for-1 with a run, an RBI and a walk. Grottola was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Bennett was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Brown was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Moscarello was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk. Donnelly scored twice.
Reed (5-17) went the distance in the second game for Canton as well. She allowed nine runs, three earned, on eight hits and two walks in 4.1 innings. Morrissey was 1-for-3. Balcom was 1-for-2 with a run. Ferrucci was 1-for-2 and Rogers had the RBI.
Grottola's two hits give her 114 for her career, tying her with Katie Marsman '16 for fourth place on the program's all-time list. She is three behind Dana Vollmuth '11 for third place.
The Bears head to Central New York this weekend to wrap up the regular season. The Bears face SUNY Cortland at 3 and 5 p.m. on Friday and Oswego State at noon and two on Saturday.
