Bears blank Baruch in season opener, 3-0

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (1-0) defeated Baruch College (0-1) 3-0 its season opener at the Northwestern Mutual (Plattsburgh) Cardinal Classic on Friday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman midfielder Kyan Tiede (Leicester, N.Y./York) opened the scoring with his first collegiate goal at the 8:43 mark.
  • Senior captain Zach Cunningham doubled the lead at 25:47 with an assist from sophomore midfielder Luke Tytler (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) and the Bears led 2-0 at the half.
  • Cunningham struck again at 49:06 to close the scoring.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears outshot the Bearcats 17-3 and generated a 6-1 advantage in corners.
  • Graduate student goalkeeper Lucas Schiel (Bremen, Germany/Colegio Humboldt) made one save for his sixth career victory and fourth shutout. Freshman James Kelm (Chester, N.Y./Chester Academy) relieved Schiel with 5:19 remaining for his collegiate debut.
  • Baruch goalie Jon Legasa stopped four shots.
  • The performance is the first two-goal game of Cunningham's career.
  • The Bears are now 3-0 all-time against Baruch. They defeated the Bearcats 3-1 in Potsdam on September 1, 2017 and 4-3 at the Lasell Kickoff Classic in Newtown, Mass. on September 3, 2011.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow when they face Manhattanville College for the first time at 2 p.m. in the second round of the tournament.
