Bears down Pioneers, Badgers in Saturday tri-match

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (6-2) defeated Alfred State (5-4) and Vermont State University-Johnson (2-8) to extend its winning streak to five on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (ALFRED ST.)
  • The Pioneers started quickly in set one and eventually opened up 22-12 lead. The Bears staged a 6-1 run to get within 23-18 before falling 25-18.
  • Potsdam reversed its luck in the second set, racing out to a19-9 advantage and downing Alfred State 25-17 to even the match.
  • The Bears continued their momentum into the third set. A kill from senior captain Megan Henry (Candor, N.Y./Candor) made it a 9-2 contest. The scoring was relatively even the rest of the way, but the Pioneers couldn't make up any ground as Potsdam claimed the 25-16 win.
  • The fourth set featured lead changes early, but came down to the wire. The Bears scored three of the last four points to pick up a 27-25 victory and claim the 4-1 match win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (ALFRED ST.)
  • Senior outside hitter Alyssa Adams (Jamestown, N.Y./Randolph) led the Bears with 14 kills, 11 digs and six blocks.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) also had 14 kills along with 16 digs and four aces.
  • Henry finished with nine kills and 11 digs.
  • Junior setter Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) registered 33 assists.
  • Graduate student middle hitter Lexi Price (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) had five blocks and senior captain Santara Hart (Meridian, Idaho/Meridian) chipped in three blocks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (JOHNSON)
  • The Badgers led early in set one, but the Bears pulled away with a 9-5 streak to close out the 25-19 win.
  • The Bears outlasted Johnson in a marathon set two, 28-26. A kill from Price gave Potsdam a 16-10 lead, the biggest of the set, but the Badgers battled to the end.
  • It was all Potsdam in the third set as the Bears finished off Johnson 25-12.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (JOHNSON)
  • Henry finished with 14 kills, eight digs and a block.
  • Adams had 10 kills and a block.
  • Prest finished her day with eight kills.
  • Layer had 19 assists and seven digs.
  • Sophomore setter Rachel Madore (Peru, N.Y./Peru) recorded nine digs and three aces.
  • Sophomore setter Gabriella Luna (Schenectady, N.Y./Mekeel Christian Academy) and freshman setter Meredith Harnden (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) each added eight assists.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Bears head to Canton for two games next Friday. They play at SUNY Canton at St. Lawrence University at 6 p.m. and against the host Saints at 8 p.m.
