CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team lost a 3-2 decision to SUNY Canton (6-3) at St. Lawrence University on Friday night, before rebounding to beat the Saints (1-9) 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED (CANTON)
- The Bears built a 10-6 lead in set one on strong serving and hitting, but the Roos rallied with a 19-4 run to take a 25-14 victory.
- Potsdam held off Canton in a close 25-17 set two win. Senior captain Megan Henry (Candor, N.Y./Candor) led the charge with eight kills.
- Set three was even closer, with the teams never separated by more than four points. Senior outside hitter Alyssa Adams (Jamestown, N.Y./Randolph) had nine kills as the Bears outlasted the Roos 30-28.
- As in set one, Canton pulled away with a late run to win set four 25-15. Henry and Adams added another three and two kills, respectively.
- Potsdam started set five on a 4-0 run, but the Roos rallied for a 15-11 win to take the match 3-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (CANTON)
- Adams finished with season-highs of 17 kills and 14 digs, along with two blocks.
- Henry had 15 kills and 17 digs.
- Sophomore outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) contributed nine kills.
- Junior setter Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) added 41 assists, 16 digs and three aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED (SLU)
- The Saints edged the Bears 25-23 in set one after trading leads. Henry and Adams each had four kills.
- Set two went in the opposite direction. Henry recorded a kill to break a 17-17 tie and Potsdam outscored SLU 7-3 the rest of the way for a 25-20 win.
- Set three played out the same as the previous one. This time it was a Prest kill breaking a 15-15 stalemate and the Bears pulled away for another 25-20 win.
- It was more of the same in the fourth set as Potsdam closed out the Saints 25-18. Adams added another three kills as the Bears earned the 3-1 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (SLU)
- Adams finished with 12 kills, 12 digs, four aces and a block.
- Henry had 11 kills, nine digs and an ace.
- Prest posted 11 kills, three digs and two aces.
- Layer registered another 29 assists, five digs and two aces.
- Sophomore setter Rachel Madore (Peru, N.Y./Peru) added another five digs.

The Bears are off until Friday, October 4, when they open SUNYAC Play at Buffalo State at 6 p.m.
