Second half outburst lifts Bears over Bloodhounds

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (2-1-1) scored three second half goals to defeat John Jay College (1-2) 3-1 on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second day in a row, the visitors struck first. At 17:08, senior forward Damian Coronel (Queens, N.Y./Hillcrest) slipped a pass through the Bears defense and junior midfielder Daniel Rosa (Lisbon, Portugal/Colegio Santo Andre) launched a shot into the upper left corner of the net.
  • Sophomore midfielder Jake Trubia (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) got the Bears even at 53:25 off a corner kick. Senior captain Zach Cunningham (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) started the play and freshman forward Leo Hector (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) sent a backwards bicycle kick towards the goal, where Trubia buried it.
  • Just six minutes later, sophomore midfielder Luke Tytler (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) headed a pass from Cunningham off the crossbar in for a 2-1 lead.
  • At 76:12, freshman forward Thomas Wendel (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) fought his way through the Bloodhounds defense to give the Bears some insurance and make it 3-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears outshot John Jay 15-3 and had an amazing 15-0 advantage in corners.
  • Graduate student goalie Lucas Schiel (Bremen, Germany/Colegio Humboldt) earned the win without a save.
  • Bloodhounds senior goalie Tyler Solis (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) made four saves.
  • The contest was the first ever meeting between the two teams.
