Bears defeat Cobleskill, Elmira on final day of Cobleskill Homecoming Classic

COBLESKILL, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (3-2) defeated Cobleskill (1-4) 3-0 before outlasting Elmira College (1-4) 3-2 in the finale of the Cobleskill Homecoming Classic on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (COBLESKILL)
  • The Bears seized control of set one with a 17-5 run to grab a 20-7 lead before sophomore outside hitter Emily Prest (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) closed out the 25-14 win with a kill.
  • Potsdam scored eight of the first 10 points in set two and held off the Fighting Tigers for a 25-18 win.
  • The Bears kept Cobleskill at bay in a competitive third set for another 25-18 win to close out the match victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (COBLESKILL)
  • Senior opposite Alyssa Adams (Jamestown, N.Y./Randolph) led Potsdam with match-highs in kills (13) and digs (7), while adding three aces.
  • Senior outside hitter Megan Henry (Candor, N.Y./Candor) registered eight kills, five assists and a block.
  • Prest finished with five kills and two aces.
  • Junior setter Sophia Layer (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) totaled contest-bests in assists (27) and aces (4).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (ELMIRA)
  • Set one came down to the wire until a Henry kill sparked a 4-2 finish to a 25-22 win for the Bears.
  • In set two, the Bears pulled ahead several times before putting the Soaring Eagles away 25-20.
  • Elmira shook off a Potsdam lead midway through the set and went on a 5-1 run to close out a 25-21 win in set three.
  • The fourth set played out the same way as the third. A 5-1 run by the Soaring Eagles clinched a 25-21 win.
  • The teams traded leads in the fifth set, but Elmira was on the brink of taking the match with a 14-10 lead. Henry then started a 5-0 run. After Elmira tied the score at 15 all, Adams put the Bears up for good with a kill and an Elmira attack error sealed the 17-15 win and the 3-2 match victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (ELMIRA)
  • Henry had a career-high 21 kills for the Bears.
  • Prest had 12 kills and eight digs.
  • Adams added another 10 kills, four aces and 12 digs.
  • Layer recorded a personal best 43 assists along with five aces.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
 The Bears host Paul Smith's College on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. for their home opener.
