Bears tame Bengals for SUNYAC win, 84-59

BUFFALO STATE, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (2-7, 2-1 SUNYAC) trailed for just 26 seconds as it overpowered Buffalo State (3-8, 1-3) 84-59 on Friday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears used three consecutive 3-pointers from junior guard Khalil Screen (Providence, R.I./Classical), senior guard Walter deFreitas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) and senior forward Parker Kelly (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) to grab a 9-2 lead and start a 22-10 run.
  • After the Bengals closed to within 24-19 at 8:40 of the first half, Screen drained another shot from long range and ignited a 19-11 flourish to finish the half. Potsdam led 43-30 at the break.
  • It was all Bears in the second half, widening their lead to as many as 28 before closing out the 84-59 victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Potsdam outshot the hosts 57.1-percent to 30.2.
  • The Bears outrebounded the Bengals 36-31.
  • Sophomore guard Nicholas Cortez (Harlem, N.Y./La Salle Academy) led the Bears with 18 points and eight assists.
  • In his Potsdam debut, Screen recorded a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Kelly finished with 15 points and five rebounds.
  • deFrietas added 13 points.
  • Bryce Williams led Buffalo State with 13 points.

The Bears head to Fredonia tomorrow for a 3 p.m. contest with the Blue Devils.
