Bears outlast Bengals to pick up SUNYAC win, 67-58

BUFFALO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (5-5, 1-2 SUNYAC) defeated Buffalo State (4-7, 1-3) 67-58 on Friday evening to get back .500 and pick up its first SUNYAC victory of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears outscored the Bengals 17-15 in the first quarter after opening up a 9-3 lead. Senior guard Barbara Bruno (Bronx, N.Y./Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology) had 10 points for the Bears.
  • Buffalo State bounced back in the second quarter, edging the Bears 16-13 to take a 31-30 lead into the half. Junior guard DaeLynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) and Bruno each had four points in the second and senior guard Mikayla Shipley (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) had a 3-pointer.
  • Potsdam opened the third quarter on a 17-8 run and led 49-43 after 30 minutes. Senior forward Jenna Cotter (Johnson City, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) scored six points and senior guard Carley Hill (Essex, Vt./Rice Memorial) matched her with two threes.
  • The Bengals got within 51-49 with 7:17 to play before the Bears finished the contest on a 16-9 run. Bruno had nine more points in the final quarter, including five from the charity stripe.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Potsdam shot 45.1-percent from the floor while holding Buffalo State to 35.5.
  • The Bears controlled the glass, outrebounding the Bengals 40-29.
  • Bruno led all scorers with a double-double of 25 points and 10 boards.
  • Cotter finished with 15 points and eight rebounds
  • Alcock had 10 points and eight rebounds.
  • Ashley Tucker led Buffalo State with 20 points and seven rebounds.
  • Maddy Stearns had 18 points and seven rebounds for the hosts, while Adiya Jones added 16 points and four boards.

The Bears head to Fredonia tomorrow for a 1 p.m. contest to wrap up the weekend.
