Bears overpower Blue Devils to complete road sweep, 69-61

FREDONIA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (6-5, 2-2 SUNYAC) withstood a late challenge from SUNY Fredonia (4-7, 1-4) before securing a 69-61 road victory in SUNYAC play on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bears trailed 11-6 just over seven minutes into the contest, but an 8-0 surge in the last 2:48 gave them a 14-11 lead after one quarter. Senior guard Carley Hill (Essex, Vt./Rice Memorial) and sophomore guard Sara Richards (AuSable Valley, N.Y./AuSable Valley) hit back-to-back threes and senior guard Barbara Bruno (Bronx, N.Y./Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology) finished the surge with a layup.
  • Potsdam started the second quarter on an 11-2 run and built a 25-13 advantage through the first 4:19. The Bears led 34-25 at the half. Hill and Bruno each had five points, including a three, and senior forward Jenna Cotter (Johnson City, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) added four.
  • Fredonia edged the Bears 14-13 in the third quarter and trailed 47-39. Hill hit two more threes, Cotter hit one and freshman guard Amya Moore (Hudson, N.Y./Hudson) had two layups.
  • An 11-5 run to open the fourth quarter got the Blue Devils within 52-50 with 6:02 remaining. However, the Bears held off Fredonia, finishing the game on a 17-11 stretch. Cotter led the charge with nine points. Senior guard Mikayla Shipley (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) had five points and junior guard DaeLynn Alcock (Philadelphia, N.Y./Indian River) scored four.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Potsdam shot 47.8-percent from the floor and held its hosts to just 39.7.
  • The Blue Devils edged the Bears on the glass, 28-27.
  • Cotter led all scorers with 19 points and grabbed eight boards.
  • Hill finished with 16 points, hitting four shots from beyond-the-arc.
  • Bruno scored eight points and had seven rebounds and Bruno finished with seven points.
  • Grace Alexander and Payton Gilbert each led Fredonia with 15 points.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday night when they host Plattsburgh State at 5:30 p.m.
